Animal Crossing: Wild World

Animal Crossing: Wild World drops you into a town with nothing but a tent, a debt to a raccoon landlord, and a cast of animal villagers who each run on the DS's internal clock — shops open and close, seasons change, and fish and bugs come and go on a real calendar that keeps moving whether you're playing or not. There's no fail state and no required objective beyond whatever you decide matters: paying off your house, filling a museum with fossils and fish, or just chatting with neighbors and rearranging furniture.

The DS version was the series' first handheld entry and added a full lowercase-keyboard chat system plus local wireless and (at the time) Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection play, letting friends visit each other's towns to trade items and dig up buried treasure together. It's slower and more meditative than most games in this library, built around returning daily rather than sitting down for one long session.
