Mario Party DS

Mario Party DS was the series' first handheld outing built from the ground up around the DS touchscreen and microphone, and it shows: a huge chunk of its 74 minigames ask you to trace shapes, tap rhythms, or blow into the mic rather than mash buttons, alongside plenty of straightforward D-pad races and reflex tests carried over from the console entries. It's the last mainline Mario Party to keep the old dice-block-and-item board format before the series started experimenting with team mechanics and rule changes in later entries.

Eight boards each carry a gimmick — a rotating carousel, a haunted mansion with a roaming boss, a candy factory with conveyor-belt shortcuts — and every character now carries a unique passive Character Item alongside the usual Star/Coin economy, adding a light asymmetry the earlier games didn't have. Local wireless multiplayer lets up to four players compete with a single cartridge via Download Play, no extra copies required.
