Ocarina of Time sends Link out of Kokiri Forest as a child to stop Ganondorf from claiming the Triforce, only for the plan to backfire: pulling the Master Sword from its pedestal seals Link away for seven years, and he wakes up as an adult in a Hyrule already fallen under Ganondorf's rule. The game plays out across both timelines, with items and songs learned as a child reshaping what's possible once you're grown.

Z-targeting locks the camera and Link's strafe onto a chosen enemy or NPC, a control scheme so effective it became the template nearly every 3D action game copied afterward. The ocarina itself doubles as a puzzle tool — songs warp Link across the map, change day to night, or trigger story events — while dungeons built around Deku Trees, Gorons, and Zoras each demand a different item just unlocked in the overworld.
