The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks keeps Phantom Hourglass's stylus-driven controls but swaps sailing for railways, replacing the overworld with a train network you build out track-by-track across New Hyrule while fending off cannon fire from bandits and monsters riding the rails alongside you. Combat still leans on swipe-based sword strikes and boomerang-throwing routes drawn on the touch screen, refined from the previous game's rougher edges.
Its biggest twist is Zelda herself: after her body is stolen, her spirit rides along as a partner who can possess suits of armor called Phantoms, letting you control a lumbering guardian to smash through obstacles and puzzles that link Link can't handle alone — a genuine two-character co-op puzzle mechanic baked into a single-player game. Dungeon design leans harder into these possession puzzles than Phantom Hourglass did, making it feel like a more confident iteration on the same control scheme.
