Castlevania introduced Simon Belmont and the Vampire Killer whip in 1986, and set the template the whole series — and half the "gothic action platformer" genre after it — would follow for years. Six stages, straight through Dracula's castle, packed with candle-smashing sub-weapons (holy water, the axe, the boomerang cross), staircases that ignore momentum, and knockback that can throw you straight into a pit.

The difficulty is the point. Medusa heads fly in unpredictable sine-wave patterns that clip you off ladders, the Stage 3 blue gargoyles gang up in packs, and the whole game demands memorization more than reflexes. Reaching Dracula's throne room for the two-phase final battle — human form, then the winged bat-demon form — remains one of the NES library's genuine tests of patience.
