Dragon Warrior
ROM download for Delta Emulator iOS · The 1986 original — a lone descendant of Erdrick, the open kingdom of Alefgard, and the birth of the JRPG
About
Dragon Warrior arrived in North America in 1989, three years after its original Japanese release as Dragon Quest, and it landed on NES shelves as something nobody quite had a name for yet: a single hero, descended from the legendary Erdrick, walking out of a castle with a copper sword and a torch to go save a kingdom nobody had properly mapped for you.
There's no party to manage and no class to pick — just you, a slowly filling experience bar, and the slime-green enemies that taught a generation of players the rhythm of grinding before a big fight. That simplicity was deliberate: designer Yuji Horii built the game to be a JRPG a total newcomer could learn in an afternoon, and it worked so well in Japan that Enix reportedly had to move release day to a Sunday to avoid kids skipping school for it.
