Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies broke from series tradition by putting character creation front and center — your whole party is built from scratch, with class, gender, face, and gear all fully customizable instead of following a fixed cast. Monsters roam visibly on the overworld and in dungeons instead of triggering random encounters, so every fight is one you can see coming and choose to avoid.
The Vocation system lets any character switch between classes like Warrior, Mage, Priest, and Paladin at will, learning skills that carry over once unlocked, so experimenting with a new build never means starting from zero. Alongside the story campaign, the Alchemy Pot lets you combine ingredients into rare gear, and a huge stretch of postgame content — including the endgame Zenithian equipment quests and a rotating slate of superbosses — kept players grinding long after the credits rolled.
