Pokemon Dark Rising throws out the mainline map entirely and drops you into an original region with its own prophecy-driven storyline, its own cast, and none of the usual Kanto/Hoenn/Johto scaffolding to lean on. You pick your starter from three hack-exclusive options at the very beginning, and from there the story escalates fast — this is one of the hacks that put "Pokemon hack with a real plot" on the map for a lot of players.

It earns its reputation for difficulty honestly: trainers hit harder, gym leaders build teams with actual synergy instead of just higher levels, and the game expects you to think about type coverage from the first badge onward. It's not a casual replay of a game you already know — it's a genuinely different, harder game wearing the FireRed engine.
