Banjo-Tooie drags Gruntilda back from the grave as a rocket-powered skeleton hunting revenge, forcing Banjo and Kazooie out of Spiral Mountain and into nine worlds that are individually bigger than the entirety of the first game — and, unlike Banjo-Kazooie's isolated levels, this time they're all connected by tunnels and warp pads that let you carry unlocked moves back into earlier areas.
The headline new trick is splitting the duo apart: Banjo can wander and solve puzzles alone while Kazooie flies off on her own path, and specific move combinations only work in one configuration or the other. Mumbo Jumbo's transformation magic gets a partner in the new shaman Humba Wumba, and Stop 'n' Swop — a feature cut from the original game — finally connects both games' worlds through hidden eggs and ice keys carried between cartridges.
