Donkey Kong 64 throws five playable Kongs — Donkey, Diddy, Lanky, Tiny, and Chunky — at K. Rool's plan to sink DK Isles, each ape locked to their own color-coded barrels, weapon, and musical instrument. Golden Bananas come in matching colors too, meaning a fair number of them are only reachable once you've found the right Kong for that specific puzzle, pushing the game toward heavy backtracking as new characters unlock.

The scale is enormous even by Rare's collectathon standards: hundreds of individual collectibles across seven worlds, a hub island that keeps expanding as new areas open, and a Nintendo 64 Expansion Pak requirement just to run without slowdown — one of the few N64 games that made the add-on mandatory rather than optional. A built-in Game Boy Camera and Game Boy Color side-feature let players unlock bonus content by connecting real hardware, an unusually ambitious cross-platform gimmick for 1999.
