Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest flips the premise of the first game — Donkey Kong gets kidnapped by King K. Rool almost immediately, and it's Diddy and his girlfriend Dixie Kong who set out across the pirate-flavored Crocodile Isle to get him back. Widely considered a leap over the original by critics and speedrunners alike, it kept the same pre-rendered CGI look while tightening nearly every system underneath it.

Dixie's helicopter-spin hover gives the movement an extra layer of control the first game never had, animal buddies get more varied roles (Rattly the snake, Squawks the parrot, Squitter the spider), and the level design turns considerably darker and more elaborate — flooded ghost ships, rollercoaster mine tracks, and bramble-choked forests replace the relatively straightforward jungle of the original.
