Super Castlevania IV reimagines the very first Castlevania as a showcase launch title for the SNES, giving Simon Belmont a whip that finally swings in all eight directions and can be used to grapple across gaps like a pendulum. Mode 7 rotation effects turn hallways into spinning, tilting set pieces, and the game leans hard into atmosphere over the brutal difficulty of its NES predecessors.

The route through the castle mixes reworked versions of classic stages — the plaza, the clock tower, the underground caverns — with new set pieces built specifically to flex the SNES hardware, all backed by one of the most atmospheric soundtracks on the console. Sub-weapons like the axe, holy water, and boomerang cross return alongside the whip, but the eight-way swing changes how every fight against Medusa heads, bone dragons, and Death himself has to be played.
