Super Metroid
ROM download for Delta Emulator iOS · The 1994 classic — Samus Aran returns to Zebes to track down a stolen Metroid hatchling
About
Super Metroid sent Samus Aran back to the ruins of Zebes in 1994 to recover a Metroid hatchling that had imprinted on her as its mother, and in doing so it wrote the rulebook for what's now called the Metroidvania genre. A sprawling, interconnected map replaces level-by-level progression, gated by suit upgrades and abilities the player has to backtrack to use — the Wall Jump, the Grapple Beam, the Speed Booster each unlock routes that were visible but unreachable an hour earlier.
What set it apart wasn't just the structure but the atmosphere: environmental storytelling with almost no dialogue, a genuinely oppressive sound design in the ruins of Zebes, and pacing that lets the player feel every bit of Samus's isolation. Sequence breaks and speedrun tech turned out to be baked into the level design almost by accident, which is why the game still has an active competitive community decades later.
