Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia

Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia breaks from the series' one-huge-castle formula, sending glyph-wielding warrior Shanoa through a set of linked outdoor villages, forests, and ruins that only funnel into Dracula's castle proper near the end. Glyphs are the whole combat system: instead of picking up static weapons, Shanoa binds spells directly to her left and right hands, mixing melee glyphs, projectile glyphs, and defensive union glyphs that combine two at once for stronger effects.

The structure trades some of the genre's satisfying single-map backtracking for a harder difficulty curve and more level variety, closer in spirit to the original series before Symphony of the Night's exploration format took over. A hub village lets you buy gear and take on side quests between areas, and it's frequently cited as one of the tougher, more combat-focused DS Castlevania entries.
