Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga

Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga is the RPG debut of the Mario & Luigi sub-series, sending the two brothers to the Beanbean Kingdom to recover Princess Peach's voice after it's stolen by the witch Cackletta and her sidekick Fawful, who plan to use it to revive the wish-granting Beanstar for their own ends.

The game's whole identity comes from controlling both brothers at once with separate buttons — A for Mario, B for Luigi — both in battle, where dodges and attacks depend on split-second timed button presses for each brother individually, and on the overworld, where Bros. Moves like Luigi bouncing Mario across gaps turn traversal into its own kind of puzzle. Bowser even joins as a temporary ally partway through, in one of the series' more memorable role-reversal stretches.
