Mega Man 3

Mega Man 3 is where the series started experimenting with its own formula instead of just repeating it. Rush, the robot dog, debuts here in three forms — Rush Jet for flight, Rush Marine for underwater sections, Rush Coil for extra jump height — turning traversal into its own toolkit alongside the weapon-stealing combat. The slide move also shows up for the first time, letting Mega Man duck under low gaps and dodge low projectiles.

The real hook is Proto Man, Mega Man's whistling, cape-wearing "brother" who shows up mid-stage, drops hints, and eventually becomes a recurring rival across the rest of the classic series. Story-wise it's also the first game to fold in a returning cast of bosses — four Robot Masters from Mega Man 2 get reused as Doc Robot fights partway through, doubling the boss count without doubling the sprite budget.
