EarthBound

EarthBound, known as Mother 2 in Japan, dropped the usual castles-and-crystals RPG setting for something much closer to home: suburban Eagleland, a lightly fictionalized version of small-town America circa the mid-90s. Ness, a kid with psychic powers, sets out from his bedroom in Onett armed with a baseball bat and a Pokey-obsessed neighbor, and the game never really stops treating that mundane framing as a joke while still taking its story seriously.

The battle system's rolling HP counter — damage ticks down like a slot machine instead of vanishing instantly, letting a character survive a lethal hit if it lands before the counter reaches zero — became one of its most imitated ideas. Status effects have names like Homesick and Diamondized, enemies range from angry taxis to unassuming garbage piles, and the whole thing builds to a genuinely strange, fourth-wall-brushing final stretch that's still discussed decades later.
