Illusion of Gaia

Illusion of Gaia follows Will, a boy attuned to psychic powers after surviving a meteor strike that killed his father, as he tracks the source of a mysterious dark force sweeping the world. The adventure hops between real Earth landmarks reimagined as dungeons — the Great Wall of China, the Nazca Lines, the Sphinx, the Angkor Wat — grounding its fantasy plot in recognizable geography rather than an invented continent.

Will can shift between three forms at set points in the story: his default psychic self, the muscular warrior Freedom who trades range for raw melee power, and the intangible Shadow who can pass through walls and enemies untouched. Each form changes how a room needs to be approached, and later chapters lean into genuinely unsettling, melancholic territory that stood out sharply from its more upbeat SNES contemporaries.
