Terranigma

Terranigma opens in a village at the bottom of the underworld, where young Ark is dared to open a sealed box and accidentally shatters the surface world in the process. A spirit named Elle sends him topside to fix his mistake by clearing monster-infested "dead zones," which regrow into functioning continents complete with plant life, animals, and eventually the first human towns — Ark rebuilds the entire planet's history from the ground up over the course of the story.

Combat and traversal echo Quintet's earlier Soul Blazer and Illusion of Gaia, with real-time sword swings, jump attacks, and light platforming layered over an overworld that visibly transforms as each region is restored. Later chapters shift the tone from restoration to a bleaker commentary on industrialization and human nature once actual civilizations take root — unusually heavy material for a 16-bit action RPG.
