Secret of Mana

Secret of Mana pulls a boy named Randi, a girl named Primm, and the sprite Popoi into a quest to stop the Empire from reviving the Mana Fortress, wielding the Mana Sword against corrupted beasts and the eight elemental Mana spirits who need to be freed along the way. Combat plays out live on the field rather than in a separate battle screen — swing, block, or run, with a charge meter rewarding well-timed hits.

A ring-command menu freezes the action for spell and item selection without leaving the map, and up to two extra players can drop in locally to control Primm and Popoi at any time, making it one of the earliest console RPGs built around simultaneous multiplayer. Weapon orbs let each character level up eight different weapon types independently, so party builds diverge fast depending on what you favor.
