Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars was built by Square using the same isometric Mode 7 tricks the studio later reused in Chrono Trigger, dropping Mario into a turn-based RPG where jumping and hammer swings are backed by a timed-hit system — press the button on the beat and every attack or block does extra damage or negates damage entirely.
Bowser's castle gets crashed by the sentient blade Exor, scattering the wish-granting Star Road into seven pieces across the Mushroom Kingdom, forcing an uneasy alliance between Mario, Bowser, Princess Toadstool, the living puppet Geno, and the cloud-prince Mallow. The cast's mix of platforming-series regulars and Square-original characters gives the story a tone unlike any other Mario game before or since.
