Mega Man Battle Network 3 continues the story of Lan Hikari and his NetNavi, MegaMan.EXE, hacking through a near-future internet where viruses and rogue programs are fought directly inside cyberspace — this entry expands the fight against the WWW (World Three) crime syndicate and opens up the Undernet, a darker layer of the network packed with tougher viruses and rarer battle chips.

Combat plays out on a grid split between MegaMan and his opponent, using collectible Battle Chips for attacks and abilities in real time, with deck-building between missions mattering as much as reflexes during the fights themselves.
