Perfect Dark

Perfect Dark takes the mission structure Rare built for GoldenEye and pushes it into an original sci-fi conspiracy, casting Joanna Dark of the Carrington Institute against the shady dataDyne corporation and a hidden alien presence called the Maians. Weapons get secondary fire modes layered on top of their primary function, objectives scale with difficulty the same way GoldenEye's did, and levels loop back on themselves with new access points once new gadgets are found.

The multiplayer suite pushed further than any console shooter before it — Counter-Operative and Combat Simulator modes support AI-controlled simulants standing in for missing human players, weapon and character options are deeply customizable, and using the N64 Expansion Pak unlocks higher-resolution visuals and even more simulant slots. It demanded serious hardware for its time, but became one of the most requested Rare re-releases for exactly that ambition.
