Sonic Advance brought classic-style Sonic gameplay to the Game Boy Advance, built by Dimps in collaboration with Sonic Team, running Neo Green Hill Zone and a full roster of Genesis-era-style stages at the fast, momentum-driven pace the series is known for, with four playable characters — Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Amy — each with their own movement quirks.
The special stages return to the classic ring-collecting formula for chasing down Chaos Emeralds, and the game leans heavily into 2D platforming fundamentals rather than reinventing the formula, making it one of the more traditional Sonic experiences available on a handheld at the time.
