Sonic Rush

Sonic Rush was Sonic Team's answer to the question of what a genuinely fast 2D Sonic game could look like on the DS: stages are built around a boost gauge that fills as you chain tricks and combos, and once it's full you can rocket through loops, ramps and grind rails at a speed the classic Genesis games never attempted. Certain sections split the action across both DS screens simultaneously, turning vertical drops and dual-path stages into a genuine use of the hardware rather than a gimmick.

The story introduces Blaze the Cat, a guardian from the parallel Sol dimension chasing a set of Sol Emeralds that have been scattered into Sonic's world alongside the Chaos Emeralds. Her stages play almost identically to Sonic's but reskin the same tracks with her own fire-based special move, and the two storylines eventually collide in a shared final confrontation with Dr. Eggman Nega.
