Star Fox

Star Fox shipped with its own extra chip soldered into the cartridge — the Super FX — because the SNES on its own couldn't render real-time 3D polygons fast enough to make the game work. That 1993 hardware gamble paid off: Fox McCloud and his Arwing-piloting team, Falco, Slippy, and Peppy, blast through genuinely three-dimensional corridors and open space to stop the mad scientist Andross from conquering the Lylat system.

Rail-shooter stages alternate with more open all-range levels, letting the player barrel-roll through incoming fire, chain boosts together, and branch onto easy, normal, or hard routes depending on how well a stage gets cleared. The wireframe polygons look primitive by any later standard, but the sense of speed and the barked voice lines — 'Do a barrel roll!' became a meme decades before that word existed — made it one of the SNES's defining tech showcases.
