Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island traded Mario's realistic sprites for a storybook art style built from crayon, chalk, and watercolor textures — a deliberate look made possible by the Super FX2 chip packed into the cartridge, which also powers the game's stretchy, squash-and-stretch animation. Yoshi carries Baby Mario on his back through every stage, and losing him starts a countdown before Kamek's minions snatch the baby away.
Eggs replace fireballs as Yoshi's main offense: swallow an enemy, turn it into an egg, then aim and throw with a targeting reticle that rewards precision over speed-running. Each of the six worlds ends with a boss fight against one of Baby Bowser's transformed minions, and hidden red coins, stars, and flowers in every level push completionists to replay stages for a perfect 100% score.
