Mega Man X2 opens with Zero apparently destroyed and his remains scattered among three X-Hunter fortresses, guarded by former Maverick Hunters who defected after the first uprising. X can raid all three bases in any order to recover Zero's head, body, and buster parts — piece together enough of them before the final stage and Zero shows up to help finish the fight.
New armor capsules add the Falcon Armor, which grants a limited flight dash, and the hidden Shadow Armor, unlocked only by tracking down all eight sub-tanks and heart tanks first. X2 also introduces the four Serges, secret bosses tucked into ordinary stages who drop upgrade parts of their own, rewarding players willing to explore every corner instead of beelining for exits.
