Mega Man X3 pits X and a returning Zero against Dr. Doppler, a reploid scientist whose "cure" for the Maverick virus turns out to be a trap engineered by a resurfacing Sigma. For the first time Zero is playable for full stages instead of just cameo assists, giving him his own saber-based moveset alongside X's buster and armor upgrades.
Ride Armors return in force, letting X pilot mechs that shrug off environmental hazards and dish out heavier damage, while a fourth armor piece — the Gold Armor — combines every previous upgrade into one set once all the capsules are found. X3 also marks the end of the SNES-era X trilogy before the series jumped to PlayStation and Saturn.
