Super Smash Bros started as a smaller HAL Laboratory project before growing into a full-blown Nintendo crossover, pulling twelve fighters — Mario, Donkey Kong, Link, Samus, Yoshi, Kirby, Fox, Pikachu, Luigi, Ness, Captain Falcon, and Jigglypuff — onto the same roster for the first time. Instead of a shrinking health bar, every hit raises a percentage counter, and the higher it climbs, the further a single strong hit sends you flying off the stage.
Stages themselves double as hazards: platforms move, edges have no walls, and ring-outs replace pins as the actual win condition, which is why simple attacks matter less than positioning and recovery options. Items drop in from the classic Nintendo universe — Poké Balls, hammers, ray guns — turning matches chaotic fast, while a full single-player mode lets one player work through the roster against increasingly tough CPU opponents.
